Course Description

Learn how to enable communities to lead design initiatives in places of worship


Apart from being special places where people practise their faith, places of worship play an important role for the wider community by providing pastoral care and much-needed local services.


Community-based design initiatives can enhance the value of these places as a sustainable resource for multiple communities.


This five-week course develops practical knowledge to empower you to help others to discover the potential of their historic faith buildings, and develop a community-led design initiative.


By the end of this course, you will know how to develop and guide community initiatives that adapt, re-imagine, and revitalise historic faith buildings.


Take an in-depth look at design and leadership in communities


The course starts with an introduction to the project management, and value, of community-based design initiatives.


You’ll unpack how communities can overcome their own barriers and effectively communicate with all involved professionals.


Apply the principles you learn to foster community engagement


Once you’ve learnt the theory on successful community-led design, you’ll start exploring how to make these projects happen.


You’ll see how these groups can develop strategies and tools to engage other people or organisations in co-creating their visions for community upliftment through historic building preservation.


Discover the steps for supporting and leading community initiatives


Developed as a collaboration between the Glass-House Community Led Design, Open University, and CS-DC, you can trust this course to give a comprehensive introduction to community-based design projects.


You’ll also earn a FutureLearn training certificate and create a portfolio.


This course is designed for anyone interested in developing community-based design initiatives, as well as their own leadership skills. Local groups, designers, funders, and support organisations will all benefit.

      The Complex Systems Digital Campus (CS-DC) is an international network of individuals and more than 100 universities and institutions working together and sharing resources to promote research and education in complex systems science and in integrative sciences. This large scale collaborative work will embody social intelligence strategies towards new scientific and educational practices, dealing with the difficult scientific, societal and environmental challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.

      In 2014 the CS-DC was recognised by UNESCO as a UniTwin linking Europe, Africa, Latin America and the rest of the world.

      Launched in 1992, the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme promotes international inter-university cooperation and networking to enhance institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and collaborative work. The Programme supports the establishment of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks in key priority areas related to UNESCO’s fields of competence – i.e. in education, the natural and social sciences, culture and communication.

      Through this network, higher education and research institutions all over the globe pool their resources, both human and material, to address pressing challenges and contribute to the development of their societies. In many instances, the Networks and Chairs serve as think tanks and as bridge builders between academia, civil society, local communities, research and policy-making. They have proven useful in informing policy decisions, establishing new teaching initiatives, generating innovation through research and contributing to the enrichment of existing university programmes while promoting cultural diversity.

      In areas suffering from a dearth of expertise, Chairs and Networks have evolved into poles of excellence and innovation at the regional or sub-regional levels. They also contribute to strengthening North-South-South cooperation.

      The CS-DC aims to provide high-quality open education in Complex Systems Science for students, researchers, industry, commerce and policy makers worldwide. This science is essential to address the urgent problems of the modern world, including epidemics, financial crashes, population movements, natural disasters, poverty, conflict and the environment. Our courses are created by leading scientists from highly ranked institutions worldwide.

      VIOLATIONS

      If you are found in violation of the Terms and Conditions or Honor Code, you may be subject to one or more of the following actions:

      • Receiving a zero or no credit for an assignment;

      • Having any certificate earned in the course withheld or revoked;

      • Being unenrolled from a course, learning program or degree program; or

      • Termination of your use of the App and/or Site.

      • Additional actions may be taken at the sole discretion of eLearnAfrica and eLearnAfrica course providers. 

      No refunds will be issued in the case of any corrective action for such violations.

      Honor code violations will be determined at the sole discretion of eLearnAfrica, the Partners, or Members. You will be notified if a determination has been made that you have violated this honor code and you will be informed of the corresponding action to be taken as a result of the violation.
